What is the interest rate on a car loan in Luxembourg?

The rate depends first on the age of the vehicle, counted from its first registration: a new vehicle or one up to 3 years old gets the lowest rates and the longest terms. Here are the monthly instalment and the total repaid for a few common cases.

New or used: what changes

  • New vehicle or up to 3 years old: the lowest rates, and a term of up to 84 months.
  • Vehicle over 3 years old: a slightly higher rate, and a term of up to 60 months.
  • Vehicle over 10 years old: a car loan is no longer possible. Only a personal loan can finance it.

To spread the repayments over a longer term, only the personal loan allows it, up to 120 months.

Who can get a car loan?

To obtain a car loan, you must meet these conditions:

  • Be resident in Luxembourg (or Belgium)
  • Receive regular income from Luxembourg (or Belgium)
  • Be of legal age (over 18)
  • Not be registered as a defaulter or subject to a wage attachment

Your income may come from employment or the civil service, a pension, replacement benefits, or self-employment based in Belgium. You must be between 18 and 75 years old (80 for homeowners).

A Belgian resident is treated exactly like a Luxembourg resident: same conditions, same rates. Residents of other countries are not eligible.

Full details are on the page setting out the conditions for taking out credit. We review every credit application personally before deciding whether to grant the loan.

Where can you buy your vehicle?

The car loan finances a purchase from a professional seller, dealership or garage, located in Luxembourg, in Belgium or in a neighbouring country such as Germany. We ask for the seller's name and address when you apply.

Buying from a private seller? The purchase is then financed with a personal loan intended for your vehicle. You can add other expenses to it, since the personal loan is not limited to the sale price. We will ask for the sale agreement and the vehicle's registration certificate.

What does the car loan finance?

The car loan finances what appears on the seller's invoice or order form: the vehicle, and also the registration costs or accessories if they are listed on it. It does not finance other expenses.

Usually no deposit is required: the credit can cover the full price. The lender may sometimes ask for one, for example 15% of the price, if it wants additional security.

How does a car loan work, step by step?

  1. Your application

Online or by telephone, with no obligation, with the seller's details. No documents are needed at this stage.

  2. Our answer

Generally within 1 to 4 working hours: this is the agreement in principle.

  3. Your documents

After the agreement in principle, we check the details of your application against the usual documents (identity, income, address) and the seller's order form or invoice. The sooner we receive your complete documents, the sooner your application moves forward.

  4. Signing

At our office, usually within 1 to 2 days.

  5. Payment to the seller

We pay the seller directly, by transfer, on receipt of their invoice. Repayment of your credit starts one month after the vehicle is delivered.

Car loan or personal loan?

The car loan is an allocated credit: it finances a specific vehicle, bought from a professional seller, on presentation of the invoice or order form. In return, its rate is generally lower than that of a personal loan.

The personal loan requires no invoice and can include other expenses. It is the one that finances a vehicle bought from a private seller or a vehicle over 10 years old, and it alone allows a term of more than 84 months.

Advantages and limits of a car loan

The advantages

  • Lower rate: generally lower than that of a personal loan, especially for a new or recent vehicle.
  • Usually no deposit: you keep your savings.
  • Fixed rate: your monthly instalment stays the same until the end.
  • Seller paid directly: we pay them by transfer, so you do not have to advance the money.
  • Early repayment: possible at any time, future interest is cancelled, subject to a fee of 1% of the capital repaid early (or 0.5% less than a year before the scheduled end). Details in the frequently asked questions.
  • Deductible interest: if you file your tax return in Luxembourg, within the limits set by tax law; every year we send you the certificate to attach to your return. Details in the frequently asked questions.
  • Several lenders: a single application gives you access to several financial partners.

Good to know

  • On invoice: the car loan finances what appears on the invoice or order form.
  • From a professional seller: it requires a purchase from a dealership or garage, for a vehicle no more than 10 years old.
  • Term and cost: a longer term lowers the monthly instalment but increases the total cost.
  • Commitment: the monthly instalment is a firm commitment, to be built into your budget for the whole term of the credit.
